Ideally located and protected by the south facing, rolling chalk hills of the South Downs, the “terroir” at Nutbourne benefits from an ideal microclimate. Fertile greensand soils and vines carefully tended all year round, making for a superb selection of excellent still and sparkling wines.
Much thought and dedication goes into producing exceptional wines from vines grown on British soil. Today, Nutbourne’s wines compete with wines produced in other regions of the world and does so extremely successfully. Hence, their many awards!
A Little Background
The first vines were planted at Nutbourne in 1979 but it was not until 1991 when the Gladwin family purchased the estate that the vineyard started to make its mark on the world. With careful management and sustainable development, Nutbourne today is deemed one of the premier boutique producers in this region of the country.
Traditional and Sustainable
Traditional methods combined with today’s need for sustainability, sees every stage of production taking place on the Nutbourne estate. From when the grapes are ready to harvest, pressed, fermented and bottled, it all happens on the estate closely watched by the Gladwin family and their consultant winemaker.
The Grapes Behind the Wines
These fine wines are made exclusively from grapes grown on the estate, and there are eight types grown to produce their single varietals and their splendid sparkling blends. The vines at Nutbourne are meticulously tended throughout the year in the most natural of ways. Hand-pruned during the winter month and then delicately trained, trimmed and nurtured throughout the summer months before the harvest begins.
Sparkling Wines
The sparkling wines produced at Nutbourne are known to excel with descriptions such as ‘generous and fruit-forward’ rolling off the tongue. As well as ‘lovely, crisp, and light’ are often heard and written about these wines which are produced by traditional bottle fermentation with minimal chemical intervention. It’s a method that’s existed for hundreds of years, and the results are exceptional.
Multi-award Winning Unique Wines
Over the years, Nutbourne has produced many award winning wines. The Nutbourne Vineyards Sussex Reserve is a lively, dry, crisp and aromatic wine made up of a blend of Bacchus, Huxelrebe and Reichensteiner grapes. It’s the very first still wine produced in England to receive a Gold Medal by the IWSC (amongst many other awards). Another superb wine produced at the Nutbourne estate is their Nutty Brut which received a gold medal at the IWSC twice. However, there are many, many more wines which have caught the attention of connoisseurs.
Visitors Welcome All Year Round
Visitors are welcome at Nutbourne all through the year. Wines are sold by the glass, bottle or by the case from their cellar. There’s a wonderful self-guided vineyard trail where visitors get to explore the vineyard and estate at their own pace. Then there’s the delightful tasting room at Nutbourne where people can taste the various wines produced on the estate.
The landscape too, is carefully tended to preserve a wonderful biodiversity of wild flowers, insects and wildlife. All in all, the Nutbourne Estate is beautifully maintained where an exceptional range of award-winning still and sparkling wines are traditionally produced to rival all others.
